When talking about Åland, thoughts usually come to mind about the archipelago’s untouched nature, red roads and cliffs. It’s Åland granite!
Eckerö
Located in the western part of the fascinating Åland archipelago, one finds the municipality of Eckerö, a scenic and historically rich place that residents and visitors have loved for centuries. Eckerö lies between Sweden and Finland and is the westernmost municipality on Åland.
Geography and Demography
Covering an area of almost 291 square miles, despite its modest territory, Eckerö is home to a variety of natural wonders and important landmarks. With a population of approximately 935 people, the largest village, Storby, lies at the heart of the municipality and serves as the main center of local activity.
Language and Culture
Swedish is the dominant language in Eckerö, which reflects the cultural and historical connection to Sweden. Throughout the ages, Eckerö has been a melting pot of traditions, where the sea has played a central role in the lives of the inhabitants. This is reflected in the municipality’s coat of arms, which proudly shows a ship.
History
Eckerö’s strategic position made it an important point for the postal service between Åland and Grisslehamn in Sweden during the 17th century. This history lives on in the form of the Post and Customs House, a building that today stands as a memorial to the region’s rich history. Adjacent to this is a monument dedicated to the many sailors who risked their lives to transport mail across the often dangerous waters of the Baltic Sea.
Tourism and Attractions
Eckerö attracts visitors with its scenic landscapes and historical sites. The popular bay of Käringsund, known for its picturesque boathouses, offers a relaxing spot for locals and tourists alike. Here, visitors can also explore the Hunting and Fishing Museum, which provides insight into Åland’s hunting and fishing traditions.
The impressive Eckerö Church, which is built from the characteristic red rapakivi granite, is also a must for those visiting the region.
